Save Money with these 5 Apps

The days of cutting coupons and budgeting with pen and paper are long gone. Whether you are trying to save, earn, invest, or budget…  there is an app for it. In fact, there are thousands. Over the last few weeks we tried out a handful of them, and these are some of our favorites.

This app literally gives you money to shop.

Ibotta is partnered with over 1,500 brands and both in-store and online retailers. When you shop at these everyday stores, you get money back.

I just hopped on and found an offer for $4.00 back on Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Makeup at Smith’s. All you have to do is buy it, take a picture of the receipt, and get $4.00 back. What a good deal!

Next time you’re planning a trip to the store, pull out the Ibotta app and plan your shopping around the available offers. Opt for the specific products that will give you cashback, and you’ll save big.

Some of the participating stores are Walmart, Target, Amazon, Costco, WinCo, Sprouts, Target, and hundreds more.

This is a really neat app that helps you save for certain goals you have- like a vacation, paying off debt, a down payment, etc.

For each of your goals, you can set rules. These include:

  • Save and Forget: Set up recurring deposits to make savings automatic
  • Payday: Save a percentage when you get paid
  • Round up: Save the change when you swipe your card.
  • Guilty Pleasure: Save when you buy stuff you’re trying to resist.
  • Spend Less: Come in under budget and save the difference
  • Freelance: Save for Tax Day when you get paid
  • 52- Week Rule: Save $1 week 1, $2 Week 2, and so on for 52 weeks.
  • Apple Health: Reward yourself for completing your health goals.

All you have to do is connect your bank account, set a goal and rules, and Quapital will do the savings for you until you reach your goal. The amount you save will be small but consistent, allowing you to save a ton without ever seeing a ton come out of your account.

Mint is a money management app that helps you budget and become more aware of your finances.

When you add your bank account to Mint, it will give you an overview of how much you have earned and spent over the span of a few months.  It will also create charts to show you visually how your finances have fluctuated and where the average is.

Mint also has a budgeting function where you can set your monthly budget in a variety of categories such as mortgage/rent, groceries, gas, clothing, personal care, and more. As you spend money in those categories, it will track where you are with your budget and notify you if you’re over budget.

Another great benefit of Mint is that it can combine all of your accounts into a single user interface. If you have a card with both Wells Fargo and Bank of America, it will combine your account balances and transactions all in one place.

This app has been such a game changer for me when it comes to budgeting. Highly recommend!

This app is a little different than the others- Acorns helps you start investing using the round-up method.

Once you connect your bank account and enter your information, they set up an investment account for you. They ask some specific questions regarding your investment preferences to figure out exactly how to set up your plan.

Each time you swipe your card, Acorn will round it up to a dollar and invest the round-up amount. For example, if you spend $25.32 on a shirt, Acorns will take the remaining $0.68 and invest it. This helps you get in the habit of regularly saving and investing, and automatically builds a savings fund into your budget.

When it comes to saving money, coupons are the go-to for most people. However, sometimes it can be difficult to find them. 2for1 is a 2for1 is a location-based deals app that shows consumers nearby deals. 2for1 is partnered with thousands of restaurants, retailers, and entertainment to offer discounts.

While there are tons of coupon apps out there, 2for1 is great because it covers every industry. You can find coupons for eating out, but also for massages, laser tag, boutiques, ziplining, karaoke, gaming centers, and just about everything else you can think of.

Best part, it’s entirely free to download and free to use.
